In our society, people are living longer than ever before but it is increasingly difficult to adopt a lifestyle and job that allows us to practice good posture to feel strong, supple and free of muscular aches and pains. If you spend a lot of time sitting at a desk it is hard to avoid developing some poor postural habits like rounded shoulders, head forward, neck tense and an over-arched lower back. This may also be true if you spend a lot of time sitting in a chair, or on a sofa, or driving, or using a phone. Over time, postural habits become ‘normal’ and the person may have forgotten how to use their muscles correctly to avoid injury. For example, they may get a sharp pain and muscle spasm in the back after lifting something unexpectedly heavy or stretching to reach something.
The good news is that it is never too late to reverse the effects of poor posture but it does require a different way of thinking and learning to change some habits. Your Soft Tissue Therapist will be able to identify causes of poor posture and provide treatment and advice to help develop and maintain good habits for a happier, healthier lifestyle. At Shropshire Massage Heather also teaches simple exercises that gently lengthen and relax overworked muscles and help to stimulate under-used muscles and joints.
